The district is trying for the second time to pass a three-year $1.27 million referendum.

Since the revenue caps were set 15 years ago, the district has made 16 position cuts.

Rio District Superintendent Mark McGuire said that if the referendum is voted down on May 20, like it was three months ago, the consequences are serious.

"There have been discussions that Rio could dissolve or consolidate in the future. It's not going to happen next year or the year after that, but in a couple years it could happen," McGuire said.

For the average $150,000 home, the referendum's passage would mean a $177 increase in the school portion in next year's property tax bill.
