MADISON, Wis. -- Videos that surfaced on YouTube showing violent fights between girls at Toki Middle School are raising questions about the root of the conflicts.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportAt Toki Middle School, Tai Woods is the West Side coordinator for Girls Inc., an after-school program that helps teach teen girls everything from leadership development to fitness and health.Woods said that girls there tell her about the fighting and other conflicts. Woods said that many of the conflicts start online with sites like Facebook, MySpace.com and YouTube."We need to pay more attention to how we can deal with the technology end of it, because that's what age we're in, and I think this is something new that we've never had to deal with before," Woods said. "So, I think we need to come up with some type of solution for that, because I think that's where most of this is getting instigated."Woods said she has been working with staff at the school to see what kind of things they can do to help. She said she believes the online issues need to be addressed by educating girls on what the consequences are and teaching conflict resolution. She said they need to offer options other than violence to solve problems between girls. The staff is hoping to implement ideas during the remainder of this year and to use the summer to come up with more idea for next year, Woods said. She said she doesn't necessarily think that fighting at the school has gotten worse but rather that it is finally being noticed and dealt with.
