SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- Sun Prairie residents weighed in at a Sun Prairie School Board meeting for a final time on Thursday night before the body draws boundary lines to determine where dozens of students will be moving.

The school district is redrawing boundary lines for its new elementary school, which is set to open next fall in the Smith's Crossing neighborhood. To compensate, school officials said that some students will need to switch schools.

Dozens attended the meeting, and public comment stretched over a three-hour period. The big issue was part of the plan that would move 53 students from Bird Elementary to Westside Elementary, WISC-TV reported.

"I think the proposals that they have put forth to move the students from within our district and into that school make geographic and socioeconomic sense. However, all of the rest of the proposals are just a quick fix for a solution that needs to have some serious time and thought and effort put into it," said Sarah Dega, a Sun Prairie residents whose children would go to Bird Elementary.

Parents said they also want to preserve the idea of a neighborhood school.

"We want them to clearly define what the priorities of the school district are and then make the additional boundary changes as necessary," said Patrick Anderson, whose children go to Bird Elementary.

Others said they don't mind the change.

"All of the schools in Sun Prairie are excellent, and if we got picked up and moved tomorrow, I would accept it because there is no inferior school in Sun Prairie," said Betsy McCrary, parent and president of the West Side School Association.
