UW Committee Discusses Changes To Seg Fee Policy

Committee Will Vote On Final Recommendations

A University of Wisconsin Board of Regents committee is discussing changing policies for spending student segregated fees, but some students said they are concerned the changes might take away their power to decide where the money goes.

Two major points of contention for students are whether money can be spent paying non-university staff working with organizations and if it can go toward rent for organization space off campus, WISC-TV reported.

"Our seg fees go to fund campus life, student orgs, student activities, and the current policy draft would take away a lot of our ability to make decisions regarding how our money is spent," said Rachael Butler, chair of the student rights campaign.

"I think with any state system that you are part of there are limitations and certain things that you can't do, and a lot of this is about defining what those limitations are," said Kevin Helmkamp, associate Dean of Students at UW-Madison, who is assisting on the committee.

The committee said it expects to vote on final recommendations, which will be sent to the president of the UW System. Those recommendations will be subject to approval by the full Board of Regents.

Right now, student government makes choices about where the money it has to allocate goes, and chancellors work with students to oversee those budgets. The proposed policy would not change that, WISC-TV reported.
