MADISON, Wis. -- A list totaling 87 proposed names for Madison's new elementary school are currently under consideration by Madison Metropolitan School District officials.

The new list is more than double the number of names that were initially put forward by members of the public. Originally, 41 names were submitted, WISC-TV reported.

"Vang Pao Elementary School" was chosen last June, but controversy surrounding the Hmong leader forced the school board to pull the name and redraft the rules so officials could only name the buildings after deceased people.

Officials are encouraging residents to comment on the names until Dec. 3. People can visit the district's Web site or send comments to: Public Information, Madison School District, 545 W. Dayton St., Madison, WI 53703.

A committee will sift through the suggestions and a finalist will be selected next February, officials said.
