Public Can Submit Name Suggestions

There are already 41 proposed names for Madison's new West Side elementary school, and the public has until Monday to suggest names.

The school was originally going to be named after the Hmong leader Gen. Vang Pao, but the Madison School Board decided to look for a new name after Pao was accused of conspiring to overthrow the government of Laos.

The school district said that any proposed names must be from people who have died.

The proposed names for the school include local television anchor Mike McKinney, who was an advocate for AIDS awareness. McKinney died from colon cancer in the summer of 2006.

Another proposed name is Corp. Mark Maida, a Madison native killed in Iraq in June 2005.

Ronald Reagan is also a proposed name for the school. The former president died in June 2004.

Some lighter possibilities that were submitted include Green Bay Packers great Reggie White, crocodile hunter Steve Irwin and Fred Rogers, who is better known as "Mr. Rogers."
