Midvale Students Plant School Orchard

Orchard Planting Aims To Teach Sustainability, Nutrition

Students at Midvale Elementary School got their hands dirty while learning a life lesson on Monday.

The lesson was Fruit Trees 101 and included more than 80 kids planting fruit trees on school grounds, WISC-TV reported.

Teachers said the goal of the lesson is to create outdoor classrooms to teach how important trees are to the environment and to also teach students about good nutrition.

"Students are really starting to eat more fruits," said Midvale health and wellness teacher Katherine Drotos. "It's great, because we all know kids aren't eating enough fruits and vegetables."

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, an international nonprofit group, helped coordinate the event at Midvale. The group is hoping to have 25 to 30 school orchards across the U.S. by 2008, WISC-TV reported.
