MADISON, Wis. -- It was back to square one as the Madison school board began the school-naming process all over again.
TALKBACK: What Do You Think? They're trying to rename the city's new west side elementary school. The process will begin with a new set of rules, reported WISC-TV.Because of controversy over the name General Vang Pao Elementary, and Pao's recent indictment, the board withdrew the name. The former Laotian general is revered in the Hmong community, but was recently arrested and charged with trying to overthrow the communist government of Laos.In the previous school-naming rules, Madison schools could be named after a prominent local or national figure, a place of local significance, or after a geographical place of interest. The newest rule, approved Monday night, states that if named after a person, the person must be deceased. The board hopes to finalize the resolution and begin soliciting new school names at the Aug. 13 meeting.
