Regents To Consider Rules Barring Campus Payments From Student Loan Companies
UW Students Took Out $592M In Loans In 2006

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin regents are expected to consider a plan this week that would bar campuses from accepting payments from student loan companies in exchange for recommending them to borrowers.The regents asked UW System leaders to develop such a plan after an investigation by New York's attorney general uncovered unethical relationships between universities and lenders nationwide.UW System spokesman David Giroux said that the policy could serve as a model for other states and may be among the strongest in the nation.UW System students took out a record $592 million in loans last year.The regents meet at UW-Milwaukee on Thursday and Friday.
