Mount Horeb Students Fundraise For Weston School

Students Sell Special Bracelets, Necklaces

POSTED: 6:15 pm CDT October 6, 2006

One week after the devastating Weston School shooting, some Mount Horeb students are making and selling spirit gear to support Weston School.

The Weston School Homecoming game was canceled last Friday after Principal John Klang was fatally shot, allegedly by a 15-year-old student at the school.

Mount Horeb Intermediate Center third- through fifth-graders made bracelets and necklaces for Mount Horeb's Homecoming game Friday night. The bracelets and necklaces include blue beads and ribbons, which represent Weston's school colors.

Mount Horeb is donating the money raised by selling the spirit gear to Weston Schools.

Although the fourth-graders at Mount Horeb don't know the students at Weston, they have been thinking of them.

"We felt kind of bad, so we really wanted to help out," said Maddie, a fourth-grader at Mount Horeb Intermediate Center.

"It was in the news; the kids had questions, of course," said Andrea Tarkowski, a fourth-grade teacher at Mount Horeb Intermediate Center.

That's when the teachers found a way to reach out to Weston Schools through Homecoming.

"And so we thought what we could do is put together some bracelets and necklaces, and either put blue ribbons or blue beads on that, and that would represent the Weston School district," said Jacque Fredrickson, a fourth-grade teacher at Mount Horeb Intermediate Center.

"They bought all the supplies, and then they showed us how we'd do it. And we put the beads on, the blue bead on," said Lindsey, a fourth-grade student.

While the fourth-graders are getting a pat on the back, they also learned a lesson.

"It's a great feeling to help somebody out. I think that it's really sad that it happened, but we can make something that's really not good into something really positive," said Olivia, a fourth-grader.

A total of $1,000 was raised by the students and teachers at the Mount Horeb Intermediate Center.

One of the teachers said she hopes Weston can use the money for a fun school activity.

Weston's Homecoming game kicks off on Oct. 14.
