Fruit And Nut Trees For All

Parks Department requirements unnecessary.

07/13/10

Yes we know, fruit and nuts for all is in many ways the perfect Madison editorial. Well it is perfect, but not for the reasons you suspect. For while a proposal to allow volunteers to plant and maintain fruit trees in city parks might strike some as typical Madison nonsense we rather like the idea. What is stereotypically Madisonian to us is the Park's Department's requirement that the trees be leased and the volunteers have insurance.

Come on. Do we really need to throw up bureaucratic obstacles to folks who want to volunteer to work in our parks taking care of fruit and nut tress that anyone could get fresh, healthy food from…for free? Doesn't anyone remember the book The Death of Common Sense? This proposal is up for a hearing at Wednesday night's Park's Commission hearing. We hope free fruit and nut fans can persuade commissioners to have a change of heart.
