MADISON, Wis. -- With the upcoming winter heating season right around the corner, the possibility of higher fuel costs on tighter budgets might mean more families looking for financial help. The Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund helps families in need, but organizers fear their fund won't be enough to take care of everyone who needs help."If you look at what's happening at the fuel pumps, can you imagine what's happening with people who have home heating oil and or natural gas, which is expected to skyrocket?" said Alderman Tim BruerBruer said he is anxiously waiting for Congress to approve funding for the Home Energies Assistance Program, which will impact the Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund."Once we know about those funds then we go out into the community during an economy that is in such a down turn that we are having to double our efforts just to maintain ourselves at last year's $3 million level," said Bruer.Organizers said the Keep Wisconsin Warm fund expects 15,000 households will apply for aid this year, which is up 20 percent over last year."Without the fund, literally thousands of households would be at risk of life-threatening situations," said Bruer. While costs are up, so are donations. The fund is $7,000 over last year's donations."The generosity of people throughout Wisconsin and Dane County makes a difference whether or not someone stays in their house, or they're able to keep their kids out of emergency shelter," said Bruer.Despite the outcome, the organization said it will continue to raise funds to help the most vulnerable residents.Organizers for the Keep Wisconsin Warm fund will soon begin campaigning for next year's funding. They hope to raise more than $3 million.
