Rising cod prices are endangering the Friday fish fry.

Benedetti's Supper Club in Beloit has been serving fried fish on Fridays for years.

In 1955, the fish fry dinner would cost 79 cents. In 2008, it now costs just under $10, WISC-TV reported.

Still, it's difficult to maintain.

"We have come across a good cod to maintain our quality here, but the cost of it has more than doubled since October," said Sandy Benedetti.

Gone are the days of "all you can eat."

"We used to be so busy in here," said Benedetti. "We felt bad when people would have to wait an hour and a half to come in for the fish fry. But now, we hope to fill the dinning rooms."

It's the same story at Denali's Restaurant.

There is no more "all you can eat," and fewer guests coming through the door, according to the restaurant's owner.

"Three years ago, it was everything," said Eric Newnham, owner of Denali's. "It would be 30 to 40 percent of the entire week's sales in a five hour period. Now it's drastically changed in the last year."

Friday night fish fries in Wisconsin are everywhere, and they're competitive. Raising prices is a last resort for restaurants, but it is happening, WISC-TV reported.

"You don't want to lose it, because it's a Wisconsin staple and tradition, but it's really going to be a challenge going forward," said Newnham.

Said Benedetti, "Our prediction is that, within two years, you will not see a fish fry in Wisconsin any longer."

Benedetti predicts fried fish will still be on the menu, but the Friday night specials could become a thing of the past.

Getting good cod has been difficult, so some restaurants are trying other fish such as perch, walleye, even catfish. For those trying to keep "all you can eat," those could be options, but customers said it's just not the same, WISC-TV reported.
