Volvo is getting into the market of premium small SUVs with a car it says is the safest Volvo ever produced: the all-new XC60.

One of the most significant safety improvements is a feature called "City Safety." It's designed to avoid the common fender-benders on crowded streets by automatically applying the brakes if the car senses that it's getting too close to the vehicle in front of it.

"We are the first manufacturer in the world to offer this type of feature as standard. City Safety clearly advertises that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced," said Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp.

The XC60 will initially be available with either a six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine, or one of two five-cylinder turbodiesel engines. All-wheel drive will be standard on all initial XC60s.

Then, later in 2009, Volvo will also offer a two-wheel drive version powered by a five-cylinder turbodiesel.

The XC60 will first be introduced in Europe in late 2008. It will come to the United States in early 2009.
