Consumer Reports has named its 2007 top picks for sedans, sport utility vehicles and minivans as well as the most fun to drive and the best budget cars.

Consumer Reports rated more than 250 vehicles in its annual April auto issue.

At the Consumer Reports auto track in Connecticut, every vehicle goes through more than 50 tests. Director David Champion and his team rack up hundreds of thousands of miles a year. Champion said that a vehicle has to do well in three key areas to be named a Consumer Reports' Top Pick.

"It needs to have tested well, up or near the top of the charts in the terms of our ratings. And then it has to have above average reliability, and thirdly it has to have performed at least adequately in all crash tests," Champion said.

The redesigned Toyota RAV4 is the new top pick in the small SUV category. It goes for $23,000 to 27,000.

Testers found the interior is comfortable, with plenty of storage and room for an optional third row seat.

Another newcomer to the Top Picks is the Infiniti G35 in the upscale sedans category. Consumer Reports said it blends sportiness and luxury for $35,000 to $39,000. A second Infiniti, the M35, was named the top pick luxury sedan.

In the minivan category, the redesigned Toyota Sienna was named the top pick for $26,000 to $38,000.

"This year they've put the all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine, which gives it better performance and better fuel economy," Champion said.

Consumer Reports' top pick in the budget car category is the Honda Fit, which sells for $14,000 to $16,000.

"It may be a small car on the outside, but it feels really big and roomy on the inside," Champion said.

The Fit comes standard with side curtain air bags and antilock brakes and does well in crash tests, Consumer Reports said.

Consumer Reports said the top pick in the most fun to drive category is the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Champion said it zips around the test track, its steering is precise and its shifting is crisp. The car's price is $21,000 to $27,000.

Rounding out the Consumer Reports' list of top picks are four more vehicles -- two each from Honda and Toyota.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid won in the midsized SUV category. The green car top pick is the Toyota Prius.

In the small sedan category, the Honda Civic was the top pick, and the Honda Accord was named top pick for family sedan.
