Children visiting a parent or loved on in the Dane County Jail over the holidays will be able to participate in a long-time Christmas tradition, according to a release.

For the past 16 years, children receive a book and a stuffed animal starting on Christmas Eve, officials said.

Sheriff’s office staff has seen over the years how the simple gift can make the experience brighter for children, according to the release. Special consideration is given to each book to ensure it includes a positive message in the story.

The Books and Bears program was created as a way to give children a positive interaction with law enforcement, officials said. All gifts have been donated by local organizations or individuals.
