Henry Vilas Zoo Welcomes New Lion Cub
Rare African Lion Club Should Be Ready For Exhibit In Spring
There's a new lion cub at the Dane County Henry Vilas Zoo.
The cub was born on Saturday, and weighs about 3 pounds, according to zoo officials.
His proud parents are Henry and Vilas. The pair arrived at Henry Vilas Zoo in June 1997 from a sanctuary in Africa's Kalahari region, according to a press release issued by the Dane County Executive's Office.
?Vilas is an excellent mother, both cub and mother are doing well," lion keeper Shane Elsinger was quoted as saying in the news release.
The baby lion doesn't have a name. County leaders said they expect to announce plans on a naming process later.
The cub won't be on exhibit until spring.
The male cub is the zoo's second new animal arriving in recent weeks. On Dec. 1, the zoo welcomed a female red panda named Sha-Lei from the Edmonton Zoo.
