WE'RE WRAPPING UP OUR YEAR LONG BUDDY PROJECT WITH
OUR FRIENDS AT DEAN CLINIC TODAY BY CELEBRATING A
DAY OF KINDNESS.
-- SUSAN --
AN EVANSVILLE COUPLE HAS DEDICATED THEMSELVES TO DOING
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS AS A WAY KEEP THE MEMORY OF
THEIR SON ALIVE.
WE WENT TO ST.
MARY'S HOSPITAL TO MEET TEAM PATRICK.
STEFANIE AND TIM GERBERDING HAVE BEEN THE RECIPIENTS
OF THE GREATEST ACT OF KINDNESS IMAGINABLE.
TWO YEARS AFTER TRYING TO HAVE A CHILD OF THEIR OWN,
THEY DECIDED TO ADOPT....AND WERE CHOSEN FROM 10 COUPLES
TO BE THE PARENTS OF BABY PATRICK.
He had a head full of dark hair, chubby cheeks.
He was in the NICU he was a feeder and grower He was
healthy and his birth parents had named him Patrick
and were hoping it would stay his name and that point,
we knew he was meant to be our son because we had
picked out the name Patrick for a child when we were
going through our journey trying to conceive.
TIM: It was unbelievable.
I think we knew at that moment that he was meant to
be our son.
SUSAN: Why was he in the NICU? STEPH:Patrick was born
two months early.
He was four pounds and five ounces so he just needed
to put a little weight on
STEPH: So they did an MRI the next day.
The neurologist came in.
Put his hand on my arm and said I'm so sorry but I
have to tell you all this and said Patrick had likely
had a stroke in utero which had stopped his brain
He had large gaps in his brain.
PATRICK WAS WITH HIS FAMILY FOR 27 MONTHS.
HE PASSED AWAY TWO YEARS AGO FROM A RESPIRATORY INFECTION.
SUSAN: During that horrible time you were the recipient
of some incredible acts of kindness.
STEPH: Oh my goodness, ever since Patrick was diagnosed
at 5 months old, people have loved and supported us
in a way that we could have never imagined.
ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF PATRICK'S DEATH A FRIEND
SENT STEPHANIE AND TIM 20 TINY HATS WITH PATRICK TAGS
SUSAN: So now you're paying it forward.
STEPH: We are.
The best way to keep Patrick's legacy alive and to
share the incredible warmth he brought to the world
is to pay it forward.
SUSAN: When Patrick was sick, you got some unexpected
STEPH: We did.
We found out that we were expectign another little
Hi Luke, hi buddy.
How old is Luke today? Luke is going to be 3 on June
IN MEMORY OF HIS BIG BROTHER, LUCAS CARRIED A BASKET
FULL OF 50 HAND MADE HATS AND DELIVERED THEM TO THE
NURSING STATION IN THE NICU.
STEFANIE AND TIM CONTINUE TO PAY IT FORWARD IN OTHER
WAYS AS WELL.

AND SHE WROTE IN IT EVERYDAY TO SHARE HER EXPERIENCE
WITH HER OTHER FAMILIES.
