JANESVILLE, Wis. -- The recent flooding in southern Wisconsin posed endless challenges and hardships to affected residents and businesses. In Janesville, one such challenge is finding a place to sell produce.

The Janesville Farmers' Market is only in its fourth season, but it is currently without a home after the Rock River spilled over its banks and washed out its Main Street location last month.

Now, the upper parking lot at the Rock County Courthouse is the market's temporary home.

Teri Huber, manager of the Janesville Farmers' Market, said that the move was made with safety in mind.

"It really was a health concern. We wanted to make sure that the vendors and the consumers are well protected. And we decided that E.coli and raw produce were not a good combination," she said.

Some farmers said that the new location is affecting sales, and not in a good way.

"People do have a little trouble finding it. They weren't sure at first if it was closed, shut down, or if it was moved," said Chris Blakeney, of Amazing Grace Family Farm.

Blakeney said that some of his crops were were flooded out while others were planted late, and working in the fields has been particularly difficult. Now with the displacement of the Farmers' Market, Blakeney said the season looks even less promising.

Organizers said it could be weeks before they can move back to the Main Street location.

"We're waiting for the city to give us the OK," said Huber. "They've already told us that they want to sanitize the streets, the railings, the tree trunks, and they want to put something on the grass to make sure that the people who come downtown are safe."

The city has added several signs directing people to the market's new location. Organizers said the signage appears to be starting to bring increased business.
