MADISON, Wis. -- A new audit said that state workers are doing a fairly good job inspecting Wisconsin's retail food and dairy operations. The Legislative Audit Bureau report released on Friday found that between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2007, almost 99 percent of the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection inspections were conducted when scheduled.Still, the study shows the agency should develop formal standards for how often inspections should be done on some dairy operations and speed up compliance efforts. The audit also found the agency did well in handling food emergencies from 2002 to 2007.DATCP Secretary Rod Nilsestuen said that in a letter to the audit bureau that he's not surprised at the findings, but acknowledged there's room for improvement.
